About Symmetricom

About Symmetricom

Time is a critical variable in nearly every electronic system. Knowing a precise time and/or frequency becomes important whenever mission critical systems, such as telecommunications networks, must be synchronized or extremely accurate measurements are required. Symmetricom is the world leader in the generation, synchronization and distribution of precise time and frequency signals.

Symmetricom designs, manufactures and markets atomic clocks and network synchronization and timing solutions used in wireline and wireless telecom networks, space, defense and avionics systems, and enterprise IT networks. Our customers include network service providers, telecom equipment manufacturers, military and aerospace contractors, enterprises, as well as government and research facilities in over 90 countries around the globe.

Telecom Solutions Division

Symmetricom's Telecom Solutions division is the world's leading supplier of network synchronization and timing solutions to global communications companies. Proper synchronization is required to ensure voice and data integrity across any digital communications network. Our products control or synchronize the flow of information, voice, video, or data. Our solutions therefore play a critical role in the operation and quality of service in traditional narrowband voice and data networks as well as in broadband networks, enabling our customers to maximize network efficiency and quality of service.

Primary Reference Sources: All clocks in a synchronization network must be referenced (also known as traceable) to a primary reference source (PRS). These systems provide the highest quality time references for telecom networking as required by international standards.

Building Integrated Timing Supply and Synchronization Supply Units (BITS/SSUs): clocks that serve as the central office frequency and time source.

Network Management Software: solutions that facilitate the management of its synchronization equipment by allowing remote management, configuration and analysis.

Wireless OEM Components and Subsystems: Wireless base stations require high performance time and frequency standards for proper operation. These synchronization subsystem OEM products are designed for integration into end-products made by network equipment manufacturers.

G.shdsl Broadband: Symmetricom G.shdsl products enable high performance broadband-over-copper voice and data services for small and medium businesses.

Timing, Test and Measurement Division

Symmetricom's Timing, Test and Measurement (TT&M) division is the leading supplier of precise timing standards to industry, government, utilities, research centers, aerospace and enterprise. We supply scientific and business solutions for customers who demand reliable products and engineering expertise in a variety of applications including timing, testing, verification and/or the measurement of a time and frequency-based signal.

The division, with headquarters in Santa Rosa, CA, was established in October, 2002 following Symmetricom's acquisitions of TrueTime, Inc and Datum, Inc. Symmetricom TT&M is the recognized technology and market leader for rubidium clocks (developing the first practical rubidium clock in 1971), cesium clocks and hydrogen masers. The division supplies more high-precision frequency and timing standards to network IT managers, military and aerospace programs, laboratories and other users than the rest of the world's providers combined.

  • GPS and Time Code Instrumentation: Highly accurate GPS-based time and frequency receivers, clocks and time code generators.

  • Time and Frequency Distribution Systems: Distribution receivers, modules and systems for RF, IRIG-B, fiber optic and other formats.

  • Precise Frequency References: State-of-the-art atomic frequency references including cesium and rubidium standards, quartz oscillators and hydrogen masers

  • Bus Level Timing: Plug-in timing cards for various computer backplanes including VME, PCI, cPCI and AT and others.

  • Network Time Servers: Hardware and software designed to keep all the computer clocks on a network precisely synchronized.

  • Space, Defense and Avionics: High-reliability products specified, designed and manufactured for the demanding requirements of Space, Defense and Avionics applications.

QoE Assurance Division

The formation of the QoE Assurance Division came about as a result of Symmetricom’s January 3, 2007 acquisition of QoSmetrics, Inc., a privately held provider of QoE solutions for IPTV and other triple play services. Symmetricom’s QoE Assurance Division provides award-winning, carrier-proven end-to-end network performance monitoring and diagnostic products for carriers, service providers and enterprises that seek to deliver mission and revenue-critical triple play network services. Symmetricom’s QoE Assurance Division’s products are used within any environment where such IP services are delivered. The Division has a strong product offering especially attractive for triple play applications. Symmetricom’s scalable triple play products enable Quality of Service (QoS) and other performance-based monitoring and diagnostics solutions in Internet Protocol Versions 4 or 6 (IPv4 / IPv6) environments. In addition, our solutions combine the unique capability of Quality of Experience (QoE) measurement quality as actually experienced by a user as opposed to how it might be inferred (QoS) from the core. Adding QoE capabilities are vital to next generation video service assurance, such as IPTV, where it is revenue critical to service providers to know precisely what a user perceives quality to be, rather than what the service provider might think the user perceives based on inferences made in the core. Our products allow large scale visibility to network impairments on quality for voice, video and data flows, enabling providers to assure network performance with pinpoint accuracy.

Symmetricom Global Services

Symmetricom Global Services provides consulting, engineering and support services for Symmetricom customers worldwide. The division provides support and maintenance contracts as well as resources to assist customers in network planning, installation, training and growth. In an era when network providers are scaling back on in-house synchronization and timing expertise, we expect the opportunities for our service and support business to continue to grow.
