Symmetricom’s QoE Assurance Division |
 |

Symmetricom's newly-formed QoE Assurance Division provides carrier-proven end-to-end network performance monitoring and diagnostic products that help carriers, service providers and enterprises deliver mission- and revenue-critical triple play network services. Symmetricom formed the QoE Assurance Division after acquiring QoSmetrics, Inc., a privately held provider of QoE solutions for IPTV and other triple play services on January 3, 2007.

The QoE Assurance Division's award winning and scalable triple play products enable Quality of Service (QoS) and other performance-based monitoring and diagnostics solutions in Internet Protocol Versions 4 or 6 (IPv4 / IPv6) environments.

In addition, these solutions provide a unique Quality of Experience (QoE) measurement. QoE can be understood as QoS from the perspective of an end user of a particular service. Anything less than the highest quality for IPTV, VoIP, and other advanced services creates customer dissatisfaction and leads to increased customer churn, higher technical support costs, and, therefore, lost of revenue and profits.

As a result, adding QoE capabilities is vital for next generation video applications, such as IPTV. Symmetricom solutions provide large scale visibility of network impairments to voice, video and data flows, enabling providers to ensure maximum network performance with pinpoint accuracy.

Symmetricom Triple Play Value Proposition
A lot is at stake with the impending offerings of IPTV, Video-on-Demand (VoD), Voice-over-IP (VoIP) and other advanced services. Delivering degraded video or voice quality, as a result of video or voice packet delivery delays or jitter, is unacceptable to customers and may result in reduced revenues and higher technical support costs.

Symmetricom's QoEsolutions are specifically designed to cost-effectively enable service providers to deliver high quality services, from the core network to the end user's equipment. Our products can help service providers anticipate and understand user and network usage and identify bottlenecks in servers, the core network (unicast / multicast), access network, and even at the end user's home.

All Symmetricom solutions are based on strong established standards:
- Voice SLS: R-Factor (ITU G107 specs)

- Data SLS: IPPM (IETF RFC2330 and ITU Y1540 specs)

- Video SLS: ETSI TR 101-290 and MPQM including V-Factor® technology
In addition, Symmetricom's QoE solutions can be fully integrated into existing networks, end-to-end, including the provider network, the network operations support network, the voice gateway and multicast / unicast IP network, and even customer premise equipment. This includes seamless integration with existing Operation Support Systems (OSS) such as those offered by NetQoS, Oki and Remedy including, SOAP / XML interface-based OSS applications.

V-Factor® Technology Overview
Symmetricom's V-Factor technology, based on the Motion Picture Quality Metrics (MPQM) model adapted specifically for end-to-end video quality scoring, is the first and only video quality metric that takes into account both network and content impairments. Symmetricom's QoE solutions, with V-Factor technology, provide a reliable benchmark (MOS score) that enables CSPs to monitor and diagnose the perceptual impact of video quality impairments that may be introduced by either transmission over an IP network or from artifacts introduced by various encoding methodologies.

V-Factor accounts for network impairments, such as delay variation and packet loss episodes, video buffer characteristics, image complexity, and type of codec, all of which impact the video buffer used to restitute a video image. The audio stream is analyzed using MOS and R-Factor models that are well entrenched in VoIP quality scoring. The data stream is analyzed using metrics described in the standard ETSI TR101290.

By combining and applying these disparate methodologies with proprietary Symmetricom algorithms, V-Factor enables the precise measurement of video performance from the core, using QoS, to the home set top box using Quality of Experience (QoE).

Traditional methods that measure QoS use metrics assessed in the core network to infer the quality a user experiences, which may or may not be accurate. QoE, on the other hand, measures video and audio quality as the user actually experiences it. So service providers can be confident that their customers are satisfied with the end-to-end, high-quality experience being provided.

What's more, by embedding V-Factor technology in set top boxes, Symmetricom enables service providers to provide a higher standard of service — via QoE measurement — by channel, region, or any other subset of users.
